Direct exposure to sunlight and moisture requires both UV protection and mildew resistant materials/construction. The thicker the rug, the more moisture is absorbed as well as retained.
Most handmade rugs boast a thick pile and feel plush underfoot,
but require some maintenance when placed in an exposed area. After a heavy rain, hang up these thicker rugs to dry in a sunny area if possible, and use a rug pad to provide
ventilation from below.
